Founded by husband and wife team Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley in 1978, Escada has since emerged a premier international luxury brand, operating a 400-store retail network worldwide. The Ley marriage was a merger of Margaretha—the Swedish and Parisian model of the 1960s and a tailor and fashion designer—with Wolfgang—the financial and operational guru who still serves as Escada CEO. Their two-building base in Munich, (one for design and one for administration), prompted Margaretha at one time to claim, “I don't see Wolfgang for weeks unless he's at home." Their high-priced line "for the working woman with a certain amount of money" launched its perfume and fragrance business in 1990, followed by Escada Beaute, its beauty product line. Despite the unexpected death of Margaretha Ley at age 56, and the subsequent repositioning of brands, Escada remains a resilient and respected force, showcasing winning fragrances: Acte 2, Into the Blue, Lily Chic, Magnetism, Moon Sparkle and more.
